2024 Section meeting

  • Wartburg College 100 Wartburg Blvd. Waverly, IA 50677 United States (map)

Information about our Fall 2024 Section Meeting at Wartburg College is being added as it is available. Please continue to check back as we get closer to the meeting!

The Section meeting will use our standard format: Section NExT activities on Friday morning, parallel sessions Friday afternoon, plenary talks Friday night and Saturday morning, parallel sessions and the business meeting through the day on Saturday, and capped with a plenary talk by a Section teaching award winner.

  • Title: Graphs, Hypergraphs, and Topology, Oh My!

Abstract: Mathematical structures and concepts can be great models of real-world data. For example, differential equations have a long history of success in applied mathematics to model dynamics found in rivers and oceans, the atmosphere, and molecular systems (just to name a few!). Network science is an area of applied math that uses graph structures to model relational systems like social, collaboration, and transportation networks. Graphs, however, are limited to modeling pairwise relationships among entities. Hypergraphs and topological spaces provide alternate models of relational systems that allow for arbitrary sized and structured relationships. In this talk I will introduce the mathematical concepts of graphs, hypergraphs, and topology and show how they are used to model real-world data from a variety of applications including biological systems, chemistry measurements, and cyber networks. We’ll also talk about what measurements and properties of these structures can tell us about the systems they model.

  • Title: Data Science for (& by) Pure Mathematicians

Abstract: Consider the skills and habits of mind developed through studying pure mathematics. These – and some basic statistical techniques – are enough to fruitfully address some questions of interest when provided a small data set. With a larger investment of time for individual learning, a healthy dose of humility, and perhaps some collaborators, even those whose preparation was in pure mathematics can produce data-based studies of interest to wide audiences. Join me for a story involving a years-long transition, a cast of dozens, learning from failure, and experiencing joy as I argue for the value of all types of research for and by all types of researchers.

  • Julia Robinson-style fun math activities!

Call for Student and Faculty Talks/Posters

As usual, we hope for a wide variety of talks from our own members. If you have something interesting to say about mathematics or teaching, contribute a talk or poster and share with the rest of the section. Students (both undergraduates and graduates) are encouraged to participate.

Proposals for talks are due by Monday, September 30th.

Registration

Online registration is helpful for planning purposes, and it also allows you to pay using Venmo. Please register online by Wednesday, October 9, 2024.
